Alebrijes: Art of OAxaca, Mexico

Learn about artists Pedro Linares Lopez and Manuel Jimenes Ramirez and the history of these colorful animal sculptures.

@HOME SUPPLIES

  • Clay – Playdoh or homemade salt dough.

  • Paper plate or something for the sculpture to sit on while it dries

  • Piece of colored cardstock or cardboard (from a cereal or cracker box, or a paper plate)

  • Acrylic craft paint

  • Small paintbrush (optional)

  • Paint dotter – something to make paint dots, the back end of a paintbrush, pencil tip, q-tip, or other stick.

  • Items to stick into the alebrije for tails, ears, horns, etc. – popsicle sticks, tooth picks,sucker sticks, match sticks, skewers, nails, wax sticks, q-tips, wire, colored electrical wire, pipe cleaners, straws, sticks and twigs, leaves, dried weeds, pebbles, beads, or other items.

  • Small cup of water

  • Scissors

  • Glue (optional)
